Australian Customs officers discovered an unexpected surprise when inspecting packages labeled as containing lingerie and shoes. The revelation led to a legal case involving Kirsten Mae Fearn, who pleaded guilty to 14 biosecurity charges in Brisbane.
Fearn’s illicit activities involved importing prohibited plants, specifically cacti and succulents, from Hong Kong to sell online. Despite repeated warnings, she continued her unlawful actions, prompting the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry to pursue criminal prosecution.
Authorities uncovered 57 cacti and succulents in the packages and an additional 50 at Fearn’s Brisbane residence. Deputy Secretary Justine Saunders emphasized the significance of biosecurity laws in protecting Australia’s economy and environment, underscoring the consequences for those jeopardizing these safeguards.
During the court proceedings, Fearn admitted to knowingly falsifying declarations and importing plants for commercial gain. The gravity of the offenses meant she faced a potential 10-year jail term and a substantial fine.
